No.45: Nightshooting

Last night, before the rain, I was out with some photographer friends for a bit of nightshooting.  Tripods in tow, we went down by the Mississippi River – the Stone Arch Bridge is always picturesque – but the new 35W bridge is stunning.  It reminded me of “War of the Worlds”. Creepy, but breathtaking. {for...

No.42: Spring has officially arrived

It’s springtime in Minnesota!  There’s still snow on the ground, but less each day.  And each night the melting snow freezes up, forming ice sheets over shallow ice pools.  The crunch and crackle as you walk over them is tremendously satisfying.  Makes me feel powerful, and gleefully destructive. My favorite flowers appear each spring.  In...

No.40: Haircut Day

T’was 2004 when I first visited Jayson at the Lyn-Lake Barbershop. Great conversation and stupidly low prices, I was sold. Carol is budget conscious too, so she was an easy convert. Perhaps only a month later, Jayson started washing Anitra’s dreads (he finishes with fragrant oils). Cory was a harder sell, but the three of...

No.34: Have yourself a merry little chewtoy

Maggie delights in gifts.  She loves to smell them first, and then get right in there as the wrapping paper is torn off.  Even if it’s not a gift for her (like dishtowels or sweaters) she licks them carefully – just to be sure.  Of course her favorites are the gifts we wrap for her...

No.30: Scene from a Winter Afternoon

IMG_5033-Edit

I admit to any who ask, I love naps. But I especially love them on winter afternoons – when the soft light of the day invites a slow drifting journey under the warmth of the down comforter. Stillness and warmth.

No.29: A Tale of Two Cranberries

It’s been years and years now since I made the conscious decision to stay in Minneapolis for the holiday.  Frenzied hours spent on highways was never conducive to thankful thoughts.  Our Thanksgiving has become a day focused on relaxation and food.  As judged by that criteria, all agreed that this was the most successful Thanksgiving...

No.27: The Rally to Restore Sanity

We planned a trip to visit my good friend Liz to coincide with John Stewart’s Rally to Restore Sanity.  Wisely, we set Liz’s DVR to record the events on television while we headed to the Mall.  Matt, fellow Kenyon alum and newly-rediscovered friend, deftly found parking (the Metro was essentially shut down by the overwhelming...
